Instagram favs - Why are there unusual pits on Pluto? The indentations were discovered during the New Horizons spacecraft's flyby of the dwarf planet in July. The largest pits span a kilometer across and dip tens of meters into a lake of frozen nitrogen, a lake that sprawls across Sputnik Planum, part of the famous light-colored heart-shaped region named Tombaugh Regio. Although most pits in the Solar System are created by impact craters, these depressions look different -- many are similarly sized, densely packed, and aligned. Rather, it is thought that something has caused these specific areas of ice to sublimate and evaporate away. In fact, the lack of overlying impact craters indicates these pits formed relatively recently. Even though the robotic New Horizons is now off to a new destination, it continues to beam back to Earth new images and data from its dramatic encounter with Pluto. Instagram favs - Pickering'S Triangle: The final region that we’re going to detail is the area known as Pickering’s Triangle with image provided by the great astrophotographer, Bill Snyder. This region of the Cygnus Loop is also roughly 15 light years-long and 3 light years-wide at its widest point. It’s called Pickering’s Triangle because, well it slightly resembles a triangle and Charles Pickering was credited with the discovery (Though he was just the Director of the observatory). If you're looking for it; this region in the original blue image a few posts ago, can be found at roughly 1 o'clock. In all, there are many more regions of the Cygnus Loop that named and cataloged, these are just a few of the major ones.

The beauty of Earth is clear, and the artistry ranges from the surreal to the sublime. Truly, by escaping Earth’s gravity we discovered its attraction. Earth as art, every Sunday—enjoy. This stunning image of the northwest corner of #Australia was snapped by a student on Earth after remotely controlling the Sally Ride EarthKAM aboard the International Space Station. The EarthKAM program allows students to request photographs of specific Earth features, which are taken by a special #camera mounted on the space station when it passes over those features. The images are posted online for the public and students in participating classrooms around the world to view. EarthKAM is the only program providing students with such direct control of an instrument on a spacecraft orbiting Earth, teaching them about environmental science, geography and space communications.The project was initiated by Dr. Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space, in 1995 and called KidSat; the camera flew on five space shuttle flights before moving to the space station on Expedition 1 in 2001. In 2011, NASA and Sally Ride Science installed a new camera system in a downward-pointing window on the station. This camera system is responsible for taking and downloading student image requests. Instagram favs - Photo by @andywcoleman // The crown jewel of the Coyote Buttes North Wilderness area is a place known as the Wave. This area is restricted to only 20 permit holders a day and transports you to an otherworldly terrain. Getting there is not easy - it is a three mile hike across hilly, rocky and sandy desert. There are no facilities, so you need to bring a lot of water along with your camera gear. The effort is worth it, though, as you could spend the entire day photographing in and around this site. The heart of the Wave - best photographed during midday when there are no shadows. I stepped back a little from the "classic" shot of the Wave to get a bit of a different perspective. @natgeocreative

Instagram favs - Western Veil Nebula (NGC 6960): This brilliant image below of the Western Veil Nebula is provided by the NOAO, 0.9 meter telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and it details the wispy filaments along this 15 light year-long, two light year-wide region of the Cygnus Loop, which is at the far right side of the image I posted yesterday. The bright star, likely in the foreground, is cataloged as 52 Cygnus and is unrelated to the explosion.
