Instagram favs - Ten years ago today NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft rocketed into the sky above the Florida coastline, beginning its long journey into the history books. The small probe — weighing barely 1,000 pounds – sped from Earth faster than any spacecraft before it, embarking on a 9.5-year voyage across more than 3 billion miles that culminated last summer in the historic first reconnaissance of Pluto and its family of small moons. “With that flyby New Horizons completed a long-held goal of the scientific community and also five-decade-long quest by NASA to explore all the planets known at the start of the space age,” said New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colorado. “And that all got its start 10 years ago today with our launch.” Today, New Horizons, now far beyond Pluto, continues to send back data from that July 14 flyby, and the detailed views of these strange new worlds have intrigued scientists and the public alike. #newhorizons #nasa

Instagram favs - The most exciting aspect of life is to live it.Far too many of us get so caught up in the daily grind of work, and sleep, work and sleep that we forget how to live. We long for sometime away from the grind, so we dream and get online. We find destinations that we dreamed of and find that it will cost $1000's of dollars to go, so we go back to the grind and begin saving a large some of money so that one day we can break from the grind and spend the $1000s of dollars that we saved for a week away from the grind, take a breath of life and then, before we know it, it is time to get back to the grind all over again to work and sleep work and sleep and save for next year's breath of life. I would like to argue that there is another way. Learn to live with less, travel with a tent, to hike into the mountains, cook your own food, do with less things, buy older cars and live in smaller homes. For some this isn't an option, but for many, I'm sure, it is. Do with less and the possibilities of life will open up. It is a life style, not an action and thus takes time to change ones life and to take it out of the commonly used mold of the grind, but once changed and put into a mold of your own making, the world will open up, dreams become realities and you will begin to breath more freely as life returns. #livewild #livefree

Instagram favs - This stunning image shows the Eagle Nebula, a star forming region located in the constellation Ophiuchus some 7,000 light years away. Since it was first photographed by Hubble in 1994, the Eagle Nebula has become one of the best known areas to study star formation. Deep within the heart of the Eagle Nebula lies magnificent pillar-like structures, such as the Pillars of Creation and the Stellar Spire. These structures can be very large. Some of these pillars are more than ten light years in height. These and other structures within the Eagle Nebula are regions in which star formation is currently taking place. Infrared images have revealed the existence of young protostars within the nebula. These baby stars will one day become real stars, perhaps with their own planets. A massive star located within the central star cluster M16 has recently gone supernova. The shockwave from this supernova will tear through the nebula, possibly even destroying the Pillars of Creation themselves. Newborn stars will be exposed and the shockwave will likely trigger a new wave of star formation. Instagram favs - The fifth planet from the sun and the largest and most massive planet in the solar system, Jupiter. Jupiter is so large in fact that you could fit every other planet in the solar system inside of it and still have room left over. Jupiter belongs to a class of planet called a gas giant. Jupiter is composed almost entirely of hydrogen and helium, with smaller amounts of other elements such as sulphur, which are likely responsible for the reddish and brownish colours in Jupiters upper atmosphere. Jupiter rotates once every 10 hours. The fast rotation of Jupiter creates the long bands we see in Jupiters atmosphere. This rapid rotation generates enormous coriolis forces that deflect Jupiters weather systems, causing them to wrap around the planet and form the bands we see surrounding Jupiter. Beneath about 600 miles of Jupiter's atmosphere, the pressure becomes so great that the hydrogen is compressed into a liquid form, turning Jupiters interior into an ocean of liquid hydrogen. Deeper still, the pressure becomes so great that the hydrogen splits into electrically charged ions, which forms an ocean of liquid metallic hydrogen. This ocean generates huge electric fields that produces a massive magnetic field around Jupiter. Jupiter's magnetic field is so large that it stretches nearly all the way to Saturn. Material from the solar wind is drawn in by Jupiter's magnetic field, producing spectacular aurorae, which can be seen in the image above. Astronomers are still unsure whether or not Jupiter has a solid core. If Jupiter does have a solid core, it's likely no larger than the Earth, and likely plays no significant or relevant role in what happens in Jupiter's upper atmosphere. The pressures are so great within Jupiter's interior that it would be virtually impossible to send any kind of spacecraft to find out if Jupiter really does have a solid core or not. This may perhaps remain a mystery forever. (Second comment below 👇👇👇)

Finding these relics at last can yield clues to how our galaxy was built, long before Earth and our sun formed.
